Food Gardening 101

This brand-new series is a fun, hands-on program designed to help gardeners successfully grow fresh food at home. Offered twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, each four-week series focuses on seasonal gardening. Join us on Tuesday evenings at the Extension Office for research-based information, practical hands-on activities, and the confidence to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest a thriving garden. We welcome beginner gardeners and anyone looking to build confidence or fill in knowledge gaps about growing food at home.

Food Gardening 101 General Overview

Spring Session – March series focused on warm-season crops for the summer growing season🍅
Fall Session – August series focused on cool-season crops for the fall growing season🥬

Class Structure: Each class meets on Tuesday evenings over four weeks at the Extension Office. Every session includes one hour of classroom instruction featuring two 30-minute presentations from gardening experts, followed by one hour of hands-on activity where participants can practice new skills and gain confidence.

Registration in advance is required as class size is limited to approximately 28 participants to ensure an engaging, interactive learning experience.

Food Gardening 101 – Fall Series🥬

Our program in August is designed to help gardeners make the most of Tennessee’s cool-season growing windows. While many people think of summer as the primary gardening season, many vegetables thrive in the cooler temperatures of fall and spring. In this four-week series, you’ll learn how to select, plant, and care for cool-season crops, giving you the knowledge and confidence to enjoy productive harvests during two similar times of year for growing food in Tennessee.

Food Gardening 101 – Spring Series🍅

Our March program is designed to help gardeners get ready for Tennessee’s most productive gardening season. While spring is the time to prepare and plant, it’s the warm summer months when crops like tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and beans really flourish. In this four-week series, you’ll learn how to plan, plant, and care for warm-season crops, giving you the knowledge and confidence to enjoy a healthy, productive summer garden.

The Spring Food Gardening 101 series is coming soon in 2027 and is not yet open for registration.

No. Food Gardening 101 is focused specifically on growing edible plants such as vegetables, herbs, and fruits. It does not cover landscape or ornamental plant care.

If you’re interested in learning about ornamental gardening, landscape design, or a broader range of gardening topics, we recommend exploring our this Master Gardener webpage which highlights upcoming classes. The Master Gardener program offers a wide selection of gardening classes, including subjects beyond food production.

While not required, we strongly encourage participants to attend all four sessions, as each class builds on the previous week’s topics and hands-on activities. Registering for individual sessions is not available.

To ensure a focused, engaging, and safe learning environment for all, this program is designed for registered participants only. We kindly ask that children not attend unless they are registered and meet the age requirement.

Absolutely! We encourage friends and family members to learn together. Each participant must be registered, and registration slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, participants must meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years and up.
