4-H Animal Projects

Hamilton County 4-H offers several opportunities for youth with an interest in animals to expand their knowledge and learn about possible career paths while having fun and making new friends. The 4-H Chick Chain program is offered each year, with registration in January and February. All Hamilton County youth in grades 4th through 12th who are enrolled in 4-H are eligible to participate.

  • Participants purchase 12 baby chicks through our office
    • Note: City of Chattanooga residents receive 8 chicks (to comply with city code)
  • Youth and parents/guardians attend a free orientation program in March prior to receiving their chicks
  • Chicks arrive sometime in April and families will be notified to come pick up their birds
  • Participants raise the chicks through the Spring and Summer months
  • In the Fall, youth can participate in poultry judging
  • Participants bring 3 of their best hens to the Hamilton County Fair in November to participate in the Poultry Show and Chick Chain Auction.

If your child is an equine enthusiast, we invite them to be a part of the Hamilton County 4-H Horse Club, Mane Attraction! The focus of 4-H Horse Club meetings is learning about horses, not horseback riding. Horse ownership is not required, only a love of horses!

  • 4-H Horse Club meets on the 1st Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
    • Parents are welcome to accompany their child to meetings
  • Club meets at Saddle Pals Riding Club in Soddy Daisy
  • Club members may also participate in the annual 4-H Hippology/Horse Bowl Contest, a fun, team-oriented contest that tests your knowledge of horses

Calling all future Veterinarians! Or youth who just love animals of all kinds. The 4-H Veterinary Science Club is for you!

  • Club meets monthly during the school year, October through May
  • Meetings are held at the Extension Office (6183 Adamson Circle)
  • Potential new members are welcome at every meeting
  • Be sure to watch the 4-H monthly email newsletter for information on the next meeting

  • Students learn about wild animals and their habitats through the 4-H Wildlife Program
  • They use the Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) manual to prepare for the Eastern Region 4-H Wildlife Judging Contest (held in May)
  • Members of the 4-H Veterinary Science Club participate in the Wildlife Judging Contest each year –
    • Attending Vet Science Club meetings is a great way to get ready for this competition!
    • Membership in the Vet Science Club is not required to participate in the Wildlife Judging Contest
